    I know it sounds silly but I actually think ‘the hills’ has some anthropological merit - it doesn’t matter if any of it’s real or scripted, the narrative itself is interesting because it lays out a lot of social hierarchies and structures and the fact that it is/was really popular grants it merit because actual young women can relate to those social structures - therefore it’s a realistic cultural mirror of how young, unattached people strategize to achieve their social objectives, be it to heighten their social status, enjoy more influence within their social networks, or lay claim to their choice of mate. Not to mention the differing cultural schema afforded to members of each gender.
